Overview / Review of Ice Hockey Shafts by Blue Cow Hockey

Ice Hockey Sticks come in one piece and two piece designs. The two-piece ice hockey stick means that the ice hockey stick blade and the ice hockey stick shaft come as separate items.

Ice hockey shafts are not made out of wood so you will only find composite ice hockey shafts. This provides a range of different types of shafts which vary in price depending on the type of material used for its strength and weight.

Please note – Ice hockey shafts and blades come in “standard” and “tapered” designs with the Ice hockey stick blade and shaft needing to match for a proper fit.

The advantages of 2 piece hockey sticks:

  • You have a greater range of shafts and blades that you can match together
    • A blade from one manufacture can be match to shaft of another manufacture giving you greater choice and the ability to find your perfect combination.
    • Hybrid sticks (composite shafts with wood blades) for those who want to use wooden blades, but embrace the advances in technology found with the hockey shafts.
  • If the just blade breaks you can easily replace it with a new one, which is usually a loss less expensive or a cheaper way to replace your hockey stick rather than a one-piece ice hockey stick.

The disadvantages of 2 piece sticks:

  • You have to connect the blade to the shaft (which is the weak point in the blade and most prone to breaking when using, although they are designed to be durable, if the stick is subjected to a strong hit in the right place, this is where the break would normally occur.
  • You can screw up the blade installation and end up with a poor quality connection, meaning you could weaken the shaft when inserting the blade which will limit it use before it ultimately breaks.
  • You have to match the correct blade type (standard vs. tapered) to the same type of shaft, not a major problem, but does cause some issues if you mistakenly order a tapered blade with a stick that only holds standard. (most blades and shaft state which ones they hold before you have to purchase.

Key performance characteristics to evaluate when buying a Hockey Shaft:

  • Flex: Flex refers to the hockey shaft stiffness. The flex ranges available for the shafts listed are:
    • Senior (flex usually between: 85-100)
    • Intermediate (flex: 65-75)
    • Junior (flex: 50)
  • Kick point: low kick point, mid kick point or constant flex curve
  • Size of stick for length and girth of shaft (ex: Int vs. Senior)
  • Tapered vs. Standard shaft so you can match to the specific blade you want
