Size Guide - Shin Guards

Shin pads, which are either too long or too short, will result in the knee or instep being exposed and unprotected.

Shin guards that are too large have two problems. If it is too long, the pad will extend down into the skate, preventing proper flexing of the ankle. If the knee does not fit into the cup of the shin guard, it will not be properly cushioned during impact, which easily leads to injury.

To ensure proper fit, make sure that the cap of the shin pad is centred upon the knee cap. The flaps of the shin guard should wrap around the calf.

Measurements for Shin Guards – Select your height from the chart below with the corresponding shin measurement.  The measurement is taken from the middle of the knee to the top of your skate eyelets.

The shin pad should then extend the full length of the lower leg.

It is important to make sure that the shin pad is not too long.  Try to keep the tongue of the skate under the shin pad

Key points to remember

  • Measure from the centre of the knee cap to the top of the skate boot. Match the player's shin size to the inches of the shin pads.
  • Player height is a secondary guideline. Shin size is primary
  • Shin guards are best fitted when player is sitting.
  • Ensure that the cap of the shin pad is centred on the knee cap. The calf padding should wrap around the lower leg.
