There are several aspects you need to consider when looking to purahcse an Ice hockey stick which include
- Left or Right Handed?
- Stick Length
- Flex
- Curve
Left or Right handed
In the UK many people are use to playing with what is classed as Right-handed equipment (such as Tennis rackets cricket bats, golf clubs etc) however in Ice hockey if you are ‘right-handed, then you technically should be more suited to a Left-handed ice hockey stick. This is because your controlling hand is at the top of the stick. However many player stick with what they know and play with a right handed stick as they do with many other sports.
If you are not sure which way is which, then please see the pic below which illustrates what is a left and right handed stick.
Stick Length
- To determine the correct stick size, first stand stick on end. The end of the stick should touch the tip of your nose.
- The stick can be cut to achieve your perfect length.
- With your skates on the stick should come up to the bottom of your chin.
Stick Flex
A stick ‘Flex is the stiffness of the hockey shaft, many senior players use either an 85 or 100 flex, with the final decision based on preference.
Junior sticks are 50 flex and there are come intermediate sticks which offer variety between 65-75 for growing players as they get stronger with age.
It is hard to recommend a flex as it is purely based on individual preference
Stick Curve
Each of the brands have their own curve designs, but most are similar in nature and can be cross referenced across each other if you are looking to try and different brand of stick?
Below is a comparison chart for the curves out at the moment, and also the individual brand graphic showing the curves?
